The Sofa: Evolution of Design
From the long upholstered benches of the Ottoman customs offices (divan) to the best-selling models in history – we remember the CHARLES sofa by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia.
The SOFA has undergone an evolution both in its intended use, becoming part of the furnishings of noble residences starting from the 17th century, and, of course, in design, style, and function.

The first sofas were upholstered seats made more comfortable by the addition of many cushions. The Arabs used them as thrones, while the ancient Romans, by creating the triclinium, furnished the homes of the aristocrats.
The sofa as we understand it today dates back to the 17th century. The idea of sitting together originated with the French, who invented quirky seating arrangements to describe the new furniture, such as two-seater settees for intimate conversations, settees with crossed seats, and the so-called indiscret, the first proposal for a round sofa.

Technology has also brought many innovations to the functions of the sofa, allowing it to assume different positions and comfort solutions through movement mechanisms.
